Hijo Nam

About the Artist
Hijo Nam is a contemporary artist whose practice explores the layered dimensions of memory and time through repetition, accumulation, and sensorial structures of material. Moving fluidly between painterly surfaces and sculptural space, she visualizes the inner rhythms of human existence and the flow of contemplation through traces left upon the surface. Her work is characterized by restrained compositions and structural tension, embodying both a contemporary sensibility and a profound depth of reflection.
Korean contemporary artist Hijo Nam will participate in the ECC Collateral Exhibition to be held in Venice in 2026. Taking place during the highly anticipated Venice art season, when the global art world turns its attention to the city, the exhibition highlights experimental and contemplative practices by contemporary artists. Hijo Nam will present new works that explore the relationships between sensation and memory, material and space, through her distinctive sculptural language.
Hijo Nam’s practice begins with the tension between surface and structure, the processes of repetition and accumulation, and the visual embodiment of time’s traces. While actively revealing the physical properties of her materials, she metaphorically layers emotional dimensions within both the pictorial plane and spatial environments. As a result, her works extend beyond mere visual imagery, expanding into “spaces of time” where viewers are invited to pause, reflect, and dwell.
Within the historical and cultural context of Venice, Hijo Nam presents both her identity as a contemporary Korean artist and a universal sensibility that resonates beyond geographic boundaries. Her work seeks a balance between traditional aesthetics and modern structural frameworks, organically intersecting the contemplative philosophy of Eastern spatial emptiness with Western perceptions of space.
An exhibition representative noted, “Hijo Nam’s work possesses the power to draw viewers inward through the subtle textures of perception. This Venice presentation will serve as an important moment for her artistic world to expand more profoundly onto the international stage.”
Through numerous exhibitions and projects both in Korea and abroad, Hijo Nam has steadily constructed her own distinctive visual narrative. The upcoming ECC exhibition is expected to become a significant platform demonstrating how her practice resonates within the broader international discourse of contemporary art.
