SPACE776 Seoul은 오는 2025년 12월 19일부터 2026년 1월 18일까지 김홍빈 작가의 개인전 〈From Chaos to Cosmos〉를 개최합니다.
이번 전시는 서울과 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동해 온 김홍빈이 축적해온 회화적 실천을 통해, 혼돈(Chaos)에서 질서(Cosmos)로 이동하는 감정과 구조의 변환 과정을 조명합니다.
김홍빈은 현실과 인간 내면의 감정이 맞닿는 지점을 회화적으로 탐구해 온 작가로, 아크릴을 반복적으로 쌓고 긁고 뜯어내는 물리적 과정을 통해 기억과 정서가 축적된 화면을 구축합니다. 그의 작업에서 회화의 표면은 단순한 이미지의 결과물이 아니라, 축적과 붕괴, 생성이 동시에 일어나는 하나의 구조적 장으로 기능합니다. 화면에 남은 흔적들은 개인적 경험과 외부 환경이 교차하며 발생한 감정의 잔여물이자, 시간의 흐름 속에서 끊임없이 재편되는 정체성의 기록입니다.
이번 전시는 작가의 주요 연작인 〈Urban Palimpsest〉와 〈Singularity Reborn〉 두 시리즈를 중심으로 구성됩니다.
〈Urban Palimpsest〉는 도시적 환경 속에서 지워지고 다시 쓰이는 기억과 감정의 층위를 회화적 구조로 환원하며, 혼돈으로 뒤덮인 현실의 표면에 축적된 시간의 흔적을 탐구합니다.
반면 〈Singularity Reborn〉은 붕괴 이후 도래하는 새로운 세계, 즉 특이점(singularity)을 통과한 재탄생의 순간에 주목하며, 소멸과 생성의 순환을 코스모스적 상상력으로 확장합니다. 서로 다른 감정적·물질적 층위에서 출발한 두 시리즈는 전시 공간 안에서 하나의 유기적 흐름을 형성합니다.
김홍빈의 회화는 해체와 재구성의 반복을 통해 혼돈을 파괴의 상태가 아닌, 새로운 질서를 가능하게 하는 조건으로 제시합니다. 화면에 드러난 균열과 단면은 감정의 상처이자 동시에 다음 구조를 위한 출발점으로 작동하며, 붕괴 이후 생성되는 의미의 순간을 포착합니다.〈From Chaos to Cosmos〉는 파편화된 경험과 감정이 어떻게 새로운 질서와 서사로 재편되는지를 질문합니다.
이번 전시는 현실과 내면, 소멸과 생성이 교차하는 지점을 통해, 혼돈을 지나 질서로 나아가는 동시대 회화의 새로운 가능성을 제시합니다.
SPACE776 Seoul will present From Chaos to Cosmos, a solo exhibition by Kim Hongbin, from December 19, 2025 to January 18, 2026.
The exhibition examines the transformation of emotion and structure from chaos to cosmos through the accumulated painterly practice of Kim Hongbin, who has been working between Seoul and New York.
Kim Hongbin is an artist who explores, through painting, the points at which reality intersects with the inner emotional landscape of the individual. Through a physical process of repeatedly layering, scraping, and tearing acrylic paint, he constructs surfaces in which memory and emotion are densely accumulated. In his work, the painted surface is not merely the result of an image, but functions as a structural field where accumulation, collapse, and generation occur simultaneously. The traces left on the canvas are residues of emotion formed at the intersection of personal experience and external environment, and serve as records of identity that are continuously reorganized over time.
This exhibition centers on two of the artist’s major series, Urban Palimpsest and Singularity Reborn.
Urban Palimpsest translates layers of memory and emotion—erased and rewritten within urban environments—into painterly structures, investigating the traces of time accumulated on the surface of a reality shaped by chaos.
By contrast, Singularity Reborn focuses on the moment of rebirth that emerges after collapse, passing through a point of singularity and expanding cycles of destruction and creation through a cosmological imagination.
Originating from different emotional and material strata, the two series form a single, organic flow within the exhibition space. Through repeated acts of deconstruction and reconstruction, Kim Hongbin’s paintings present chaos not as a state of destruction, but as a condition that enables the emergence of new order. The cracks and cross-sections revealed on the surface function simultaneously as emotional wounds and as points of departure for new structures, capturing moments in which meaning is generated in the aftermath of collapse.
From Chaos to Cosmos asks how fragmented experiences and emotions can be reorganized into new orders and narratives. Through intersections of reality and inner life, destruction and creation, the exhibition proposes new possibilities for contemporary painting as it moves from chaos toward cosmos.
