김진아는 회화와 조형, 그리고 기억과 감정의 경계를 넘나들며 자신만의 섬세하고 감각적인 시각 언어를 구축해온 한국계 미국인 시각예술가입니다. 1993년 뉴욕에서 태어나 한국에서 성장한 그녀는, Maryland Institute College of Art에서 학부를, Pratt Institute에서 석사 과정을 마치고 현재 뉴욕 브루클린을 중심으로 활동하고 있습니다.

그녀의 대표적인 작업은 개인의 기억, 관계, 일상의 파편 같은 사적인 서사를 부드러운 색채와 촉각적인 재료로 재해석하는 페인팅 연작입니다. 김진아의 회화는 종종 여러 겹의 붓질과 긁기, 닦기, 연결하기 등의 행위를 통해 만들어지며, 때로는 천 조각을 꿰매듯 캔버스를 구성하기도 합니다. 이러한 물리적 개입은 감정과 기억의 켜를 시각적으로 쌓아올리는 방식이자, 회화의 내러티브를 공간적으로 확장시키는 시도이기도 합니다.

Jean Oh is a Korean-American visual artist who navigates the boundaries between painting, sculpture, memory, and emotion to construct a delicate and sensorial visual language of her own. Born in New York in 1993 and raised in Korea, she earned her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and her MFA from Pratt Institute. She is currently based in Brooklyn, New York.

Jean Oh’s work centers on personal narratives—memories, relationships, and fragments of everyday life—reinterpreted through soft color palettes and tactile processes. Her paintings are built through repeated layers of brushwork, scraping, wiping, and stitching, sometimes incorporating sewn fabric elements into the canvas. This physical engagement with the surface serves as a way of layering emotional and mnemonic depth, turning painting into a spatial, experiential form.

Rather than focusing on representational imagery, Oh emphasizes the evocation of emotion and the trace of presence. Her abstract forms—often derived from familiar yet intimate subjects such as sofas, scars, or old photographs—are rendered in warm, muted tones, inviting viewers to project their own memories and emotions onto the work. Each piece becomes a poetic device, activating a quiet emotional resonance.
