SPACE 776 is pleased to announce Soft Home, a solo exhibition by South Korean artist Jeong Yeon Kim.
Jeong Yeon Kim's exhibition, titled "Soft Home" or "Restful Home," is a profound and introspective creation. In this body of work, Kim metaphorically refers to her early sanctuary as 'nature,' which was often disrupted by the 'storm' of life's challenges. Her home has always been fraught with internal conflicts stemming from the tension between her and her mother, the familial obstacles encountered during her marriage, and the many great hardships she endured. The artist borrows the ancient term "Gannansingo" to emphasize the weight of her pain, recognizing that no simple words can fully express it. In the words of Hannah Arendt, pain is inherently incommunicable, especially through language.
In the midst of this turmoil, Kim found solace in creating her 'home' through the language of silence and art. "Restful Home" serves as a metaphorical expression of daily life, presented through an autobiographical narrative. The artwork, displayed on the surface of a small wooden box, features reliefs and drawings that cyclically explore the concept of a home, exploring themes of symbiosis, division, and diffusion. Each day brings slightly different habits and life scenes, crafting a lyrical account of human existence. As Kim puts it, "Like writing a diary, I create my own home and stories every day, recording the state of my mind." "Soft Home" becomes a place of reconciliation and restoration, a testament to Jeong Yeon Kim's personal journey and artistic expression.
