ABOUT

New York, NY – SPACE776 is pleased to present My Right Hand & Your Left Hand, a solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Kun Kyung Sok that explores personal and collective experiences through collaboration, participation, constraints, and community.

Growing up during Korea's economic boom and driven by a desire to achieve equitable economic progress, Sok studied political science and development studies. After working in several developing countries, she eventually realized that art holds the key to transcending life's struggles and fostering deeper connections.

Sok’s most recent project, My Right Hand & Your Left Hand, is an extension of this idea. In the original performance piece, the artist orchestrates a collaboration, in which two people of different backgrounds come together to prepare food, symbolizing the act of "breaking bread" as a unifying experience that transcends personal struggles. The collaboration simultaneously marks an extension and a constraint of one’s movements, since the artist and the participant must work together and coordinate their hand and body to complete the tasks. At the end of the performance, the artist and the participant feed each other the cooked dish (e.g. egg roll) and share the joy and the fruit of their labor.

Subsequently, Sok has expanded the project to include knitting, pottery, and collaborative painting. The series subtly challenges the viewer’s initial perception of self as a single individual, replacing individuality with a sense of communal belonging and connection. The work also reveals the power of human touch in the process of shared creation. Through the live performance, the artist and the participant converse with and get to know one another. What remains thereafter is not only the shared creation and the documentation of the process, but also the sense of human warmth, shared community, and greater bonding between the artist, the participant, and the audience.

Through My Right Hand & Your Left Hand, Sok embarks on a creative journey that goes beyond the boundaries of individuality, delving into the symbiotic connection between hands, bodies, and shared experiences.

"My Right Hand & Your Left Hand is not about blending my personal traits with those of others,” Sok explains. "It is about creating something entirely new through an open-ended process. The exhibition is a journey into an expanded idea of collaboration and creativity — one that questions the lines between self and other, individual and collective."

The artist will conduct the My Right Hand & Your Left Hand performance on the opening night - Friday, January 24, from 6 to 8 pm; Wednesday, January 29, from 2 to 4 pm; and Wednesday, February 5, from 2 to 4 pm.
