SPACE776 Seoul은 2026년 1월 29일부터 2월 22일까지 김영미, 김준환, 김홍빈, 유인, 전가을, 정환영, 조무현 작가가 참여하는 그룹전 <Lines of Sight>를 개최합니다.
이번 전시는 자동차를 하나의 고정된 상징이나 명확한 주제로 규정하기보다, 시선이 형성되고 장면이 인식되는 조건으로 느슨하게 설정합니다. 자동차는 단순한 이동 수단을 넘어, 근대 이후 인간의 감각과 시각 경험을 근본적으로 변화시켜온 매개였습니다. 속도의 가속, 시야의 분절, 프레임화된 풍경은 자동차가 만들어낸 새로운 감각의 질서였으며, 이는 회화와 사진, 영화 등 시각 예술 전반에 지속적인 영향을 미쳐왔습니다.
자동차 안에서 바라보는 풍경은 정지된 관람의 대상이 아니라, 흘러가며 포착되는 장면에 가깝습니다. 창문이라는 물리적 프레임, 이동 중 발생하는 거리와 속도의 차이, 반복적으로 스쳐 지나가는 장면들은 세계를 인식하는 방식을 변화시켜 왔습니다. 이러한 시선은 때로는 목적지를 향한 방향성을 지니고, 때로는 아무 의미 없이 흘러가는 배경으로 남습니다.
<Lines of Sight>에 참여한 작가들은 자동차 자체의 형상이나 아이콘을 재현하기보다, 그와 함께 발생하는 시선의 방향, 거리, 리듬에 주목합니다. 보는 위치와 이동의 속도, 멈춤과 통과의 감각은 각자의 화면 안에서 서로 다른 밀도와 분위기로 드러납니다. 이 장면들은 하나의 해석으로 수렴되기보다는, 각기 다른 감각의 잔상으로 남아 관람자의 경험과 만나며 다시 구성됩니다.
이번 전시는 명확한 서사나 단일한 의미를 제시하지 않습니다. 대신 여러 개의 시선이 나란히 놓일 때 생겨나는 간격과 여백, 그리고 그 사이에서 발생하는 감각의 차이에 주목합니다. 화면 위에 남은 장면들은 완결된 이야기라기보다, 지나간 순간의 일부이거나 관람자의 기억과 경험에 따라 다시 연결될 수 있는 단서에 가깝습니다.
SPACE776 Seoul은 《Lines of Sight》를 통해 동시대 미술에서 ‘무엇을 그렸는가’보다, ‘어떤 조건에서 바라보는가’가 어떻게 이미지와 전시를 구성하는지를 질문합니다. 자동차라는 근대적 발명 이후 형성된 시각의 역사와 오늘의 회화적 감각이 교차하는 이 전시는, 서로 다른 시선들이 공간 안에서 겹쳐지며 만들어내는 흐름과 리듬을 조용히 드러내는 자리입니다.
SPACE776 Seoul presents the group exhibition Lines of Sight from January 29 to February 22, 2026, featuring works by Gaeul Jeon, Hongbin Kim, Hwanyoung Kim, Junewhan Kim, Moohyun Joo, Youngmi Kim, Yuin.
Rather than defining the automobile as a fixed symbol or a clearly bounded theme, Lines of Sight approaches it loosely—as a condition through which vision is formed and scenes are perceived. Beyond its function as a means of transportation, the automobile has fundamentally reshaped human perception and visual experience since the advent of modernity. The acceleration of speed, the fragmentation of vision, and the framing of landscapes have constituted a new sensory order produced by the automobile, one that has continuously influenced visual arts such as painting, photography, and film.
The landscape viewed from inside a car is not a static object of contemplation, but a sequence of passing scenes captured in motion. The physical frame of the window, variations in distance and speed generated through movement, and repeatedly fleeting images have transformed the way we perceive the world. Such modes of seeing sometimes carry a sense of direction toward a destination, and at other times remain as meaningless backgrounds that simply pass by.
The participating artists of Lines of Sight do not seek to represent the automobile itself as an image or icon. Instead, they focus on the directions of vision, distances, and rhythms that emerge alongside it. Viewing positions, speeds of movement, and sensations of stopping and passing through appear within each work as differing densities and atmospheres. These scenes do not converge into a single interpretation; rather, they persist as residual impressions that encounter the viewer’s own experiences and are reconfigured in the act of viewing.
This exhibition does not propose a clear narrative or a singular meaning. Instead, it attends to the intervals and spaces that arise when multiple gazes are placed side by side, and to the subtle differences in sensation that occur between them. The scenes left on the surface of the works are less like complete stories than fragments of passing moments—clues that may be reconnected through the viewer’s memory and experience.
Through Lines of Sight, SPACE776 Seoul poses a question central to contemporary art: not simply what is depicted, but under what conditions one looks. Situated at the intersection of the visual history shaped by the modern invention of the automobile and contemporary painterly sensibilities, the exhibition quietly reveals the flows and rhythms that emerge as disparate lines of sight overlap within a shared space.
