Lynn Basa
I’ve trained myself not to dwell on the past. My memory mechanisms have become feeble from disuse. But what feelings and images that remain show up in my work. Here are some things I remember: A path in a remote area in the south of France where solid rock had been worn down ankle deep by centuries of goats and people going to and from the village; digging in the creek bed behind the house where I grew up to find geodes and getting a whiff of sulphur when I cracked them open to see their crystalized innards. These evidences of long-dead actions, these secrets within objects seem exquisitely poignant. They remind me of how much each of us carries around inside that we try not to say or show. How urgent life is when we’re alive but in the end there are only mute traces of those absorbing moments, of at all.
It seems funny at first but one of the major philosophical discoveries of Modernism is that an artwork is not a table. Once I understood that an art object wasn’t necessarily passive or neutral or self-contained, that it has a presence which influences our response – in a sense, it brings expectations to us as much as we do of it – I started to ask new questions of my work:
Lynn Basa is an artist living in Chicago. In addition to having completed numerous public art commissions, she is a painter. She has taught in the Sculpture department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is the author of The Artist’s Guide to Public Art: How to Find and Win Commissions.
