ABOUT
Space 776 | New York is pleased to present the Otherworldly Vessel curated by Shota Hachisako showcasing the works of Mariko Fujimoto, with select collaborations that expand the thematic scope of the exhibition.
Title The Otherworldly Vessel speaks to the idea of transcending human limitations, presenting the artworks as metaphorical vessels for forces beyond the realm of human understanding—whether divine, spiritual, or otherworldly, conveying emotions, beliefs, and energies that transcend the individual and speak to universal experiences. The exhibition explores the delicate interplay between humans and the potential for transcendence, in Fujimoto’s painting Silent Fury, 2024, an ethereal figure embodies the intersection between the human form and cosmic forces, capturing the tension between the earthly and the ethereal.
Shota Hachisako’s curation creates an immersive environment with the spatial arrangement and lighting carefully considered, using subtle shifts in tone and atmosphere to guide the viewer's experience. The exhibition design emphasizes the fragility of the human condition while invoking the infinite potential for connection to forces greater than oneself. To broaden the interpretation of art as a vessel not only for individual expression but also for larger, shared existential themes the curator includes Mariko Fujimoto’s solo works as intimate reflections on human limitations, as well as her collaborative pieces to introduce broader reflections on collective human experiences with the key artworks placed to unfold the narrative as the viewer moves through the space and explore their internal landscapes through the lens of Fujimoto’s art, while also recognizing the broader, collective questions of existence and purpose.
