SPACE776 Seoul은 2026년 5월 15일부터 6월 14일까지 이승의 개인전 ‘Peregrination’을 개최합니다. ‘순례’ 혹은 ‘여정’을 의미하는 이번 전시는 작가가 시간과 공간을 가로지르며 축적해온 감각과 경험의 이동을 시각화한 신작으로 구성됩니다.
이승의 작업은 단순한 재현적 회화가 아니라, 경험의 파편이 축적되고 해체되는 장(場)에 가깝습니다. 특정한 풍경이나 사건을 명시하기보다, 이동의 과정 속에서 체화된 감각의 흔적을 화면 위에 재구성합니다. 이러한 접근은 단일한 시점이 아닌, 다층적인 시간과 경험이 중첩된 상태를 형성하며 관람자가 자신의 기억과 감정을 투사하도록 유도합니다.
작업에서 반복적으로 등장하는 형태와 제스처는 형식적 반복을 넘어, 축적과 소멸의 리듬을 드러내는 장치로 작동합니다. 쌓이고 지워지는 표면은 ‘남겨짐’과 ‘사라짐’이 동시에 발생하는 상태를 보여주며, 존재를 고정된 실체가 아닌 끊임없이 변화하는 흐름으로 인식하게 합니다. 이로써 회화는 완결된 이미지가 아닌, 지속적으로 진행되는 과정으로 제시됩니다.
특히 작가는 재료의 물성과 반복적 행위를 통해 화면에 시간성을 부여합니다. 층위가 축적된 표면은 단순한 시각적 결과를 넘어, 행위와 시간의 흔적이 응축된 하나의 기록으로 읽힙니다. 이는 회화를 이미지의 영역에서 확장시켜, 경험과 기억의 구조로 작동하게 만듭니다.
Peregrination은 목적지에 도달하기 위한 여정이 아니라, 이동 그 자체의 의미를 사유하게 하는 전시입니다. 작가는 명확한 결론을 제시하기보다, 관람자가 각자의 감각과 경험을 통해 스스로의 여정을 발견하도록 열린 구조를 유지합니다.
SPACE776 Seoul은 이번 전시를 통해 동시대 회화가 시간, 기억, 존재의 문제를 어떻게 재사유할 수 있는지를 제안하며, 회화를 고정된 이미지가 아닌 지속적으로 생성되는 경험의 장으로 확장하고자 합니다.
SPACE776 Seoul is pleased to present Peregrination, a solo exhibition by Seung Lee, on view from May 15 to June 14, 2026. Meaning “pilgrimage” or “journey,” the exhibition features a new body of work that visualizes the movement of sensations and experiences the artist has accumulated across time and space.
Lee’s practice does not function as representational painting in a conventional sense, but rather as a site where fragments of experience are accumulated and dismantled. Instead of depicting specific landscapes or events, the artist reconstructs traces of embodied sensations formed through the process of movement. This approach creates a layered condition in which multiple temporalities and experiences overlap, inviting viewers to project their own memories and emotions onto the surface.
The recurring forms and gestures in Lee’s work operate beyond formal repetition, serving instead as mechanisms that reveal the rhythm of accumulation and dissolution. The layered and partially erased surfaces present a state in which “what remains” and “what disappears” coexist simultaneously, encouraging an understanding of existence not as a fixed entity but as a continuous flow. In this sense, painting is presented not as a completed image, but as an ongoing process.
Through materiality and repetitive action, the artist imbues the surface with a sense of temporality. The stratified layers transcend purely visual outcomes, functioning as condensed records of time and gesture. In doing so, the work expands painting beyond the realm of imagery, allowing it to operate as a structure of experience and memory.
Peregrination does not propose a journey defined by a destination, but rather reflects on the meaning of movement itself. Rather than offering a definitive conclusion, the exhibition maintains an open framework in which viewers are encouraged to discover their own paths through personal perception and experience.
Through this exhibition, SPACE776 Seoul proposes a reconsideration of how contemporary painting can engage with questions of time, memory, and existence—expanding painting from a fixed image into an ever-evolving field of experience.
