오는 2025년 6월 21일부터 7월 20일까지, SPACE776 서울은 이민우 작가의 첫 개인전 《PURISM》을 개최합니다.
대중문화의 중심에서 오랜 시간 활약해온 그는 이제 예술가로서 새로운 길 위에 서 있습니다.이번 전시는 작가의 새로운 회화 및 오브제 작업을 중심으로 구성되며, 예술가로서의 이민우가 처음으로 선보이는 본격적인 작품 세계를 담아냅니다.

이민우는 K-POP 1세대 그룹 신화의 멤버로서 무대 위에서 강렬한 이미지를 구축해왔으며, 동시에 예능과 방송을 통해 대중과 긴밀히 소통해온 인물입니다. 그가 선택한 ‘삐에로’는 단지 분장된 인물을 넘어선, 그 자신이 감당해온 역할과 삶의 은유입니다. 이번 전시에서 이민우는 그 상징을 ‘코’라는 하나의 오브제로 축소하고, 다시 확대합니다. 이 코는 단순한 이미지가 아닌, 정체성과 관계, 시선과 존재 사이에 놓인 철학적 지점이자 상징적 구조물로 기능합니다.

전시 제목인 PURISM은 말 그대로 ‘순수함’에 대한 탐색이자, 복잡한 감정과 가식의 껍질을 벗겨낸 가장 본질적인 상태에 대한 사유를 담고 있습니다. 우리가 누군가를 바라보는 첫 지점이 얼굴이라면, 그 중심에 자리한 코는 시선의 집약점이자 타인의 감각을 자극하는 물리적, 심리적 장치입니다. 작가는 이 코를 통해 ‘삐에로의 역할’이 지닌 양가적 정서를 끄집어냅니다. 그것은 웃음과 눈물, 연기와 진심, 거리감과 친밀감이 교차하는 지점입니다.

삐에로의 코는 작가에게 있어 존재의 상징이며, 타인과 연결되는 접속점입니다. 하나하나 다른 형태로 반복되는 코의 조형물들은 각기 다른 인간 군상을 상징하며, 우리 각자가 지닌 고유성과 동시에 사회 속에서 느끼는 보편적 외로움, 존재에 대한 주목 욕구를 드러냅니다. 이민우의 작업은 관객이 그 형상을 마주하는 순간, 자신의 정체성과 감정을 비추어보게 만드는 반사체로 작동합니다.

그는 말합니다. “삐에로는 무대 위에서 웃고 있지만, 가장 많은 눈물을 감추고 있다.”

이번 전시 PURISM은 바로 그 감춰진 눈물 속에서 피어나는 순수한 인간성과, 예술이 줄 수 있는 긍정적 에너지에 대한 제안입니다. 코를 통해 비로소 자기 자신을 응시하고, 타인을 바라보며, 연결되어가는 이 조용하고도 선명한 시도는 우리 시대에 예술이 필요한 이유를 다시 묻습니다.

SPACE776 Seoul presents Lee Minwoo’s first solo exhibition, PURISM, from June 21 to July 20, 2025.
Having long thrived at the heart of popular culture, Lee now stands at the beginning of a new path as an artist. This exhibition centers on his latest paintings and sculptural objects, offering a deep and deliberate introduction to his artistic universe.

Lee Minwoo is best known as a member of the first-generation K-POP group SHINHWA, where he established a powerful stage presence and built strong rapport with the public through television and entertainment. The “clown” he has chosen as a motif is more than a costumed figure—it is a metaphor for the roles he has embodied and the life he has led. In this exhibition, Lee isolates and expands the clown’s red nose into a singular object of focus. This “nose” functions not merely as an image, but as a symbolic structure positioned at the intersection of identity, perspective, and existence.

The exhibition title PURISM explores the idea of “purity” in both literal and philosophical terms—an attempt to strip away layers of pretense and emotion to reveal an essential state of being. If a face is the first point of contact in how we perceive others, the nose at its center becomes a focal point of both gaze and sensation. Through this symbol, Lee draws out the ambivalent emotions carried by the clown figure—between laughter and tears, performance and sincerity, distance and intimacy.

For Lee, the clown’s nose represents both the essence of being and the point of connection with others. Each sculptural nose, varying in form, symbolizes diverse human figures. These works reflect both individual uniqueness and the universal feelings of solitude and longing for recognition that exist within society. Lee’s art acts as a mirror, prompting viewers to reflect on their own identities and emotions in the moment of encounter.

He states,
“Though the clown laughs on stage, it hides the most tears.”
PURISM presents a proposition of pure humanity and the positive energy that art can bring—emerging from behind the hidden tears. Through the symbol of the nose, Lee invites us to see ourselves, to perceive others, and to connect. This quiet yet powerful gesture raises anew the question of why art remains essential in our time.
