Ushio Shinohara is an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist currently based in New York. A central figure of the Japanese avant-garde group Neo Dada Organizers in the 1960s, Shinohara rose to prominence by boldly dismantling the conventions of traditional art and exploring new possibilities for artistic expression.

His practice spans painting, sculpture, and performance, with his iconic “Boxing Painting” series earning particular renown. In these works, Shinohara dips boxing gloves into paint and strikes the canvas with forceful, spontaneous gestures, amplifying the performative act of painting and powerfully revealing the relationship between the body, art, energy, and trace.

Shinohara’s work is an intricate fusion of Japanese traditional painting, manga-inspired imagery, wartime history, and the influence of American Pop Art. After relocating to the United States in 1969, he became deeply engaged in New York’s art scene, producing monumental “Motorcycle Sculptures” and large-scale installations crafted from discarded and recycled materials, continuing his exploration of materiality and sculptural form.
