New York, NY - Space 776 is pleased to present Architecture of Insecurity, an exhibition that finds beauty in the physicality and practicality of spaces by STUDIO KYSH— a collaborative architecture endeavor based in New York City. On view June 17 - 30, 2021. During its rapid growth in the late 1800s, New York City formed most of its current modern city fabric. As a city of immigrants with its own cultural insecurity, New York borrowed the architectural style of its diverse ancestral European roots in an attempt to create a historic urban context. This European influence, combined with the advancing construction technology / socioeconomic factors of the time, forged a unique architectural environment. Architectural elements of different origins, whether ornamental or functional, were melded together into idiosyncratic yet cohesive New York buildings. The Insecurity of the new city became the drive to develop a new identity. STUDIO KYSH— is an architectural design studio based in New York City. Since its inception in 2018, the studio has been investigating the urban conditions of its immigrant home, New York City. New York, NY- Space 776 is pleased to present a solo exhibition of paintings and ceramics by New York-based artist Frank Olt at Space 776 New York on view from March 26 to April 25, 2021. Olt’s abstract work form a unique hybrid of ceramics and painting in the New York school tradition. Forged in his signature style, they combine ceramic media and glazing components with mixed media; rich hues from encaustics bring together the small not-quite-symmetrical abstract pieces in a way that sometimes recalls the color field artists, though often suggesting landscape. Frank Olt is an artist and professor at Long Island University whose studio practice focuses on ceramics and painting. He is a former artist-in-residence at MoMA P.S.1. He studied with Bauhaus artist Rose Krebs. Olt exhibited and has collectors nationally and internationally. His commissions include all ceramic art at the 23rd & Ely subway station through the NYC Arts for Transit program and Bellevue Hospital. His work was exhibited recently in a one-person show in the Contemporary Gallery at Nassau County Museum of Art. Lynn Basa: In the Aggregate February 26 - March 23, 2021 Aggregate: - a whole formed by combining several (typically disparate) elements. - a material or structure formed from a loosely compacted mass of fragments or particles. Paintings made by scraping through layers of previous decisions to find that the process itself turns them into something else in the aggregate. Of course, it’s an allegory for the imperfection of memory, and the impossibility of going back. But that can be a good thing. Some things need to stay buried. Basa’s interest in materials began as a child by grubbing for fossils in the ravines of southern Indiana and weaving nests in clumps of prairie grass. After a long foray into clay and fiber art she turned to painting with encaustic because the medium of oil pigment and beeswax provides many of the effects of ceramics without a process mediated by equipment and kiln time. Lynn Basa lives and works in Chicago in an old storefront that was originally a Polish sausage shop. She has an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in-studio and critical theory, and a BA in fine art from Indiana University with a concentration in ceramics. She taught in the Sculpture Department at SAIC and is the author of The Artist’s Guide to Public Art. Rimm Chae | Dancing Willows February 5 - 23, 2021 With her experience of 20 years as a jewelry designer and her knowledge of traditional lacquer art, she started creating “sculptural paintings.” Chae’s work has taken the form of “sculptural paintings,” bringing both painting and sculpture together into one. Although Chae’s work is based on conventional Korean lacquer paintings, the bold use of color and repetition of points and lines bring these paintings closer to Western art. Using mother-of-pearl and different precious stones such as traditional gemstones (coral, amber, jade, lapis lazuli, tiger’s eye), pearls, turquoise, her art represents the meeting point between painting and sculpture, conceptualism and realism. Rimm Chae received the Leonardo Da Vinci Award in Florence, Italy. Her works of art were also accepted and exhibited at the Start Art Fair held at London’s Saatchi Gallery in 2017. She became the first Korean ever to win the SOLO Award at the Artexpo New York. The International André Malraux Association also awarded her at the International Cultural Heritage Fair held in Paris. She has successfully held numerous solo exhibitions in Seoul, New York, and Paris. Her artwork has also been well-received at leading art fairs in Miami, Barcelona, Singapore, Cologne, Taipei, London, Brussels, and Toulouse. Nina Klein An Open Myth: reimagining gender and femininity January 15 - February 3, 2021 Space 776 is pleased to present an exhibition of 19 new paintings by Los Angeles based artist Nina Klein at Space 776 New York in collaboration with Uncommon Beauty Gallery, on view from January 15 to February 3, 2021. Using various media such as acrylic, gouache, and enamel paint on paper or unprimed canvas, Nina Klein creates her signature visual lexicon of symbolic shapes within the female body. The symbolic and iconographic shapes found within Klein’s paintings serve as vehicles to express themes of sex and identity and pose questions about traditional gender roles and expectations. Klein subverts the male gaze by representing female experiences such as the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and birth as well as reimagining archetypal mythic female figures, such as the witch or the Virgin Mary, as subjects seen and created through a female lens. Nina Klein (b. 1987, Southfield, MI) expects a graduate BA from UCLA in 2022 and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Liz-N-Val, Jean Oh, So Ye Oh, and MarcusGlitteris Something from Nothing Art 37-39 Clinton St NEW YORK December 4 - 27, 2020 Opening Reception: 6-8pm, Friday, December 4, 2020 Space776 is pleased to present Something from Nothing Art, a group exhibition featuring new and important works by artists Liz-N-Val, Jean Oh, So Ye Oh, and MarcusGlitteriS. Artists: Liz-N-Val is the moniker of the Eastern European art team, Elizabeth Clark (b.1931) and Valentine Goroshko (b.1944), based in NYC. They have been a working team for over thirty years, inventing numerous conceptual museums and the concept of Signature Art. Liz-N-Val has mixed various mediums, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and combining all of the above plus language art. The artists have set precedents in the expanded field of art since the conceptual art movement. Liz-N-Val is the founder of Abstractrealism: the philosophy of "something from nothing Art.” ​ Jean Oh (b.1992) holds a BFA from MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) and an MFA from Pratt Institute. Oh has been featured in Saatchi Art Rising Stars Report 2019. She also has been selected as the winner of the Silver Award for AHL-T&W Foundation Contemporary Visual Art Awards. She has had solo exhibitions at the Steuben Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, and Project space at the NARS Foundation in Brooklyn, NY. Her work was presented by numerous group shows in the USA: 2019 11th Annual Juried Art Show (Riverviews Artspace, Lynchburg, VA); 2018 Small Work 2018 (Trestle Gallery Brooklyn, NY); and Concept 2018 (CICA Museum, Gimpo, South Korea.) So Ye Oh (b.1993) is a New York-based artist, making soft sculpture-like shabby dolls and baby blankets using her own digitally printed fabrics and found fabrics. With developmental psychology studies from her college and further research she has done in graduate school, she focuses on childhood and parenthood themes, especially the relationship between a mother and a child. She received a BA from the University of Michigan in 2016 and graduated from the MFA Fine Arts program at Pratt Institute in May 2020. MarcusGlitteriS (b.1975) is a self-taught artist from the Lower East Side. His paintings are inspired by vibrant fluorescent colors, glitter, metallics, textiles, and pop culture. His art is inspired by nightclubs, the energy of The New York City ”Club Kids“, DragQueens, and Creatures of the Night.
