Seoul, Korea - Space 776 is pleased to present Urban Arboretum, a group exhibition of four artists that are united by their depiction of the hidden and beautiful aspects of urban life despite the diversity of their backgrounds, aesthetics, and age.

 

New York-based artist Saul Chase, a painter and printmaker, chose the city's varied landscapes as the central theme for his artwork. With an art career that spans 50 years, his work is currently in multiple museums’ permanent collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It is his first-ever exhibition in South Korea. Mengfan Bai, who was born and raised in China and currently resides in New York, paints common scenes of real-life in figurative yet minimal geometric style, with linear subjects like traffic lines, playground sidelines, and city skylines. Taher Jaoui is a self-taught international artist who currently works and lives in Madrid, Spain. He creates unconventional and powerful large-scale abstract mixed media paintings and shows them extensively around the world. His creating process is a labor-intensive work with the idea of continuing the legacy of the abstract expressionism movement from the 50s and 60s.  Gilles Chalandon, who captures extraordinary moments on canvas and paper with his unique method of rendering, draws inspiration from his travels and picturesque views of Japan, Australia, and the Philippine Islands. His approach to creating art is to execute quick sketches on a drawing pad, what he refers to as “snapping the shot.”

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Saul Chase (b. 1945, New York, US) was born in the Bronx, New York in 1945. As a child, he became interested in drawing and painting and was inspired by the hidden beauty of the cityscape. Ground railways, subway stations, fields around the station, old industrialized structures, and giant signboards have become the main themes of Chase's iconic architectural painting and silk prints. Chase studied fine art at CCNY, received a master's degree in art education at the graduate school of the University, and taught painting. More than a hundred works by Chase were sold to famous print dealers at the ACA Gallery and the Andrew Crispo Gallery in New York. His works are now housed in the Metropolitan Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Yale Art Gallery, and his special silkscreen print "goya" was featured in the September 1980 issue of "Art News".

Mengfan Bai (b.1994, China) received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and her BFA in oil painting from Sichuan Conservatory of Music, Chengdu, China. Her works have been shown widely in the U.S. and China, including SPACE776, New York, Boers-Li Gallery, New York; Carriage trade Gallery, New York;  PULSE Art Fair, Miami; OCAT Institute, Beijing;  Art Cloud, Shenzhen; White night gallery, Chengdu. Mengfan lives and works in New York City.

Taher Jaoui (b.1978, Tunisia) graduated from the world-renowned Sorbonne University in Paris in 2007. He now lives and works in Madrid. Jaoui’s compositions are built through an intuitive and unconscious process. His inspiration comes from many sources, including abstract expressionism, cartoons, graffiti, street art, and primitivism. Jaoui’s work mixes paintings and drawing in ways that are both abstract and figurative. His colorful compositions stimulate the viewer's feelings and imagination and let them build their own interpretation. Jaoui attractively combines a full palette of color and texture, using oil, enamel, spray paint, and charcoal on canvas. Jaoui is represented by galleries in London, Tel Aviv, Tunis, Dubai. His works are prominently featured in numerous private collections in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the USA. Taher's artwork is met with great success in Art Fairs and other shows.

Gilles André Chalandon (b. 1956, Le Vigan, France) is a painter and swimmer. At 11 years old his godmother gave him a choice between a camera or a radio for a gift; he chose the camera. Since then he has been interested in the realism and exactness that photographic technology offers. Gilles has always been pulled away from pursuing art, by swimming, work, and traveling, but in times of transition, like his move from his small town in the south of France to Paris, his later move to New York, the birth of his daughter, and  January 2016, with the death of David Bowie, he would find himself diving back into illustrating and painting.

서울, 한국- 스페이스 776 갤러리 서울은 도시생활의 숨겨진 면면을 4인의 시선으로 재해석한 그룹 전시 <Urban Arboretum (도시 정원)>을 6월 8일터 30일까지 개최한다. 이번 전시에서는 각각의 출신 배경과 나이, 관점이 모두 다른 4명의 아티스트가 함께한다. 

 

뉴욕 출신의 화가이자 프린트메이커인 ‘사울 체이스(Saul Chase)’는 50여년이 넘는 커리어 동안, 도시의 정적인 풍경을 주요 소재로 삼아왔다. 메트로폴리탄 뮤지엄을 비롯한 여러 미술관들이 그의 작품들을 영구컬렉션으로 소장하고 있다. 이번 서울전은 한국 관객들과는 처음으로 만나는 자리로서 더욱 뜻깊다. 현재 뉴욕에서 활동중인 중국 출신의 젊은 화가 ‘멩판 바이(Mengfan Bai)’은 일상생활에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 ‘선'을 그리는데 꾸준한 관심을 갖고있다. 교통선, 운동장의 라인, 도시의 스카이라인 등을 작품의 주요 소재로 삼고 기하학적 패턴의 미학을 선보인다. 현재 스페인 마드리드에 머물며 작업을 하는 튀니지 태생의 작가 ‘타헤르 자오이(Taher Jaoui)’는 다양한 재료를 이용해 세계에 대한 그만의 해석을 파격적이고 독특한 스타일로 대규모의 캔버스에 그려낸다. 그의 추상화들은 1950년대와 60년대의 추상표현주의의 유산을 잇는 노동집약적인 작품들이다. 지극히 일상적인 순간 속 비범함을 독특한 렌더링 기법으로 캔버스와 종이 위에 풀어내는 프랑스 작가 ‘질 샬롱동(Gilles Chalandon)’은 일본, 호주, 필리핀 열도를 여행하며 영감을 얻는다. 그는 “스냅샷'이라는 자신만의  방식으로 순간의 아름다움을 빠르게 스케치해낸다.  

 

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
 

Saul Chase 사울 체이스 1945년 뉴욕 브롱스에서 태어났다. 그는 어린시절, 드로잉과 페인팅에 관심을 갖고 도시 경관의 숨겨진 아름다움에서 영감을 얻었다. 지상철, 지하쳘 역, 역 주변 벌판, 오래된 산업화된 구조물  그리고 거대한 간판 등은 체이스의 아이코닉한 건축 페인팅과 실크프린트의 주요 주제가 되었다. 체이스는 CCNY에서 순수미술을 전공하고, 동대학 대학원에서 미술교육 석사를 받은 후 페인팅을 가르쳤다. 뉴욕의 ACA 갤러리와 Andrew Crispo Gallery 등에서는 체이스의 백여점의 작품이 유명 프린트 딜러들에게 팔렸다. 현재 그의 작품은 메트로폴리탄 뮤지엄, 스밋소니언 아메리칸 아트 뮤지엄, 브루클린 뮤지엄, 예일 아트 갤러리 등에 소장되어 있으며 특히 실크스크린 프린트인 “고야(goya)”는 <아트뉴스> 1980년 9월호에 “Print of the decade” 셀렉션에 실리기도 했다.

Mengfan Bai 멩판 바이 1994년 중국에서 태어난 멩판 바이는 뉴욕에 거주하며 작업을 하고 있다. 뉴욕의 SVA에서 MFA, 중국 청두의 쓰촨 음악원에서 유화로 BFA를 받았다. 바이의 작품은 뉴욕 보어스리 갤러리, 뉴욕 캐리지 트레이드 갤러리, 마이애미 펄스 아트 페어, 청두 화이트나이트 갤러리 등 미국과 중국에서 전시되었다.

Taher Jaoui  타헤르 자오이 1978년 튀니지 튀니스(Tunis, Tunisia)에서 태어났다. 2007년 파리 소르본 대학교를 졸업후 현재 마드리드에 거주하며 작업을 한다. 자오이의 작업은 직관적이고 무의식적인 과정을 통해 만들어지고, 주로 추상적 표현주의, 만화, 그래피티, 거리 예술, 원시주의를 포함한 다양한 소스에서 영감을 얻는다. 그는 페인팅과 드로잉을 추상적이고 비유적인 방식으로 혼합하며 이러한 다채로운 작품들은 관람자들의 감정과 상상력을 자극해, 그들만의 해석을 만들어낼 수 있도록 한다. 오일, 에나멜, 스프레이 페인트, 숯 등을 캔버스 전면에 사용해 매력적인 작품을 만들어내는 자오이의 작품은 유럽, 중동, 아시아, 미국 등 세계 곳곳의 갤러리에서 소장하고 있다.

Gilles Chalandon 질 샬롱동 1956년 프랑스 르 비공(le vigan)에서 태어난 질 샬롱동은 화가이자 수영선수이다. 그가 11살 때, 생일 선물로 카메라 혹은 라디오 중 고르라는 대모의 말에 샬롱동은 카메라를 선택한다. 그때부터 사실성과 정확성을 만드는 사진작업에 관심을 가져왔다. 하지만 어느순간 그의 삶은 미술과 수영, 일과 여행에서부터 멀어지게 됐다. 프랑스 남부의 작은 마을에서 파리로 이사하던 시기에, 2016년 1월 데이비드 보위의 죽음과 함께, 또 그의 딸의 탄생과 함께 다시 일러스트레이팅과 페인팅의 세계로 뛰어들어 지금까지 활발하게 작품 활동을 이어가고 있다.
