PALMER SERIES

Revealing pressure and pause, ink describes a drawing and words, each tethered to the
writer; words silently voicing language, the drawing spinning out the skill, diligence, and
standing of its author.
Another drawing builds, unintended, like the sound of a crowd, as the author’s damp
words and signatures seep over and over into a blotter, a palimpsest of all messages.
 
The Palmer Series will be seen as a departure from my usual practice. In that, I posit
unstable, uncanny juxtapositions in single photographs, shown in series and
sequences. For an analogy I look to dance or jazz: engage the body, have good chops,
pay attention, and aim for a surprise. Such photography boils down to transmitting data
as experience.

David Freund holds degrees in Theater from UC Davis, and MFA in Photography from the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY. His photographs created for a National Endowment for the Arts grant showed gas station environments in 47 states. Other grants include New York’s Creative Arts Public Service program and NYC’s Institute for Art and Urban Resources. In Syracuse for a Light Works fellowship, Freund curated an exhibition of regional photo postcards and authored a catalog, Penny Publishing. His work has been exhibited at Light Gallery in New York, MoMA P.S. 1, and the George Eastman House. Among collections with his work are the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Bibliotheque Nationale.
