Tana Oshima was born in 1976 in Kanagawa, Japan, to a Japanese father and a Spanish mother. She grew up between Japan, Peru, Argentina, Spain, and France. She is a graduate of Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain, in Journalism (2000).
A New Yorker since 2018, Oshima is also a writer and a literary translator. She is the author of nine self-published comic books that have been distributed across the US, Latin America, and Europe among a small circle of readers. Some of her comics have been compiled into an anthology in Mexico (Rialta, 2022).With her unique biracial, multicultural, and multilingual background, she has created a unique in-between universe where she finds herself at home. Place, hybridity, and transit are at the core of Tana Oshima’s art and literary practices, in which words and images often coexist in the same space. To her, the canvas and the paper function as a multiplying mirror where a place of existential loneliness and fragmented “halves” may become full and whole in new ways that are larger and freer than what any defined category can bring.
